Canadian F1
Grand Prix
What a Grand Prix this year's Canadian race turned out to be, and not just for the events happening on the circuit during the race, afterwards turned out to be as controversial as those on track.

There were multiple safety car deployments, a big crash that for a short while looked life threatening, and quite a few surprises throughout, including the finish.

Immediately from the start Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton were fighting for pole. Alonso tried to overtake Hamilton at the start on the first corner, and come the second he'd overshot and raced across the grass coming out ahead.

Hamilton and the rest of the pack were racing around the track, so when Alonso bounced back onto the track he had to let Hamilton through and try to regain his position before the corner, however he lost second place to Nick Heidfeld.

Jenson Button
fails to get going
Meanwhile Jenson Button was sitting back on the starting grid with a Honda that just wouldn't start, another bitter blow for the Honda team. He was taken back to the pits and poor Button didn't even start the race. It wasn't the end of the embarrassments for Honda in the race.

Hamilton was putting his foot down and making as much as he could of the lead, and he was doing well. Going faster and faster and setting better and better lap times, he was starting to extend a lead from second place Heidfeld

While it was all happening with the McLaren's, there was some similar goings on with the Ferrari's. Felipe Massa passed Kimi Räikkönen going into the first turn and as Kimi Räikkönen fought back he nudged into the back wheel of Massa.

On the ninth lap Scott Speed bumped the inside of Alexander Wurz while he was trying to pass on the inside of a corner and he begins driving slowly, nursing a twisted front wheel until he finds a safe place to park the car up and finish his race.

Fourteen laps in and it is clear that Alonso isn't having a strong race. He's struggling in the car and on the same corner that he came off trying to pass Hamilton he careers off again. Probably quite a good choice of words as it happens.

Mark Webber had a poor start initially and dropped down to ninth. He was quick to make that up though, and he started tearing through the grid, even passing David Coulthard who seemed to be struggling once again.

Pressure starts to show
Nineteenth lap and Alonso really is showing some serious problems as he goes off again at the very same corner. There's some discussion that perhaps he has damaged the underside of the car, but would that mean he would come off at the same corner repeatedly? This time he lets Massa through and loses another position.

Lap twenty two and the safety car comes out after Adrian Sutil hits the pit wall and scrapes along it until he's in a much more dangerous position. As soon as the safety car is announced both Alonso and Rosberg pull into the pits just before the lane is closed.

Before this Hamilton had extended a pretty big lead and had managed to take a pit stop and still remain out in front. Now that was threatened as the safety car comes out to squash the lead, meanwhile both Alonso and Rosberg have taken a free pit stop out of it.

However after the safety car went in and the stewards came out. Alonso and Rosberg were pulled up and given a stop-go penalty.

That's not all though, two cars were seen leaving the pit lane during the safety car period under a red light. Massa drove straight out past the red light and Fisichella even passed another car to get out. It took a few laps but they were quickly black flagged and taken out of the race immediately.

After the safety car comes in the race begins again, and not soon after, with almost dance like precision, Rosberg and Trulli spin off the track together, neither even touching each other. Rosberg sat there in the middle of the track for a few anxious moments as he couldn't get the car back into gear to move off.

Horrific crash
Then on lap 27 Robert Kubica has a massive accident, coming out of the hairpin he drives straight off the road at about 180mph and launches into the air hitting the wall on the left, the car then twists and rolls across the track smashing into the wall on the left and sliding down there on the side of the car.

The crash looked horrific, with most of the car ripped off and strewn across the track and everyone else driving across bits of debris.

Initially Kubica wasn't moving and it looked very grim, however quickly we learned that he was conscious and after some time at the hospital we heard that he was awake and talking about the crash.

A broken leg seemed to be all he had suffered, a miracle indeed and a testament to the protection and safety features of the car itself.

Coulthard retired with gearbox problems once again. At one point over the radio he was telling the team that he couldn't steer or brake properly, but that it was loads of fun to drive.

On lap 55 there's another incident and the safety car comes out once again. Liuzi hits the wall and slides along to a pretty safe position, however to make totally sure the safety car pulls out and slows the pack down once again.

This time, before the safety car even pulls in, Trulli slides into the wall and is out as well.

Lap 68 and Takuma Sato astonishes everyone with a superb manoeuvre passing Alonso.

However there's not much change to the end of the race and the amazing Lewis Hamilton takes the win. Hamilton is only six races into his first season in Formula 1 and people have to remember that, he's not even raced on some of these tracks before. Well done Hamilton.
