The Haiku operating system has now got its first distribution, but the distribution is not coming from the Haiku development team, it’s coming from Poland.

The distribution is called GNU/Haiku 0.1.0 and is being released by Pingwinek, Pingwinek also releases Pingwinek GNU/Linux, and their Haiku distribution includes the base Haiku system, the GCC 2.95.3 compiler, several simple games, SDL, Midnight Commander, and ncurses.

It also includes 40 packages ported from the Pingwinek GNU/Linux distribution. The GNU/Haiku distribution can be installed on an HDD or run under QEMU or VMWare. There is also a LiveCD made available for download.

The Haiku operating system is still in alpha state, but it’ll be fun to give this distribution a good spin around the block. You can download the distribution here. I just can’t wait to give it a spin, and if you for some wacky reason get disappointed or have problems, remember that the Haiku operating system is maturing fast, so the problems you might have now, will possibly be fixed already in the next release.
